PLEK Forum Theatre weekly blog posts
Welcome to our Forum Theatre blog! I will be posting a series of blog entries. These blog posts aim to share with all of you the creative process PLEK and the Theatre Group in Amsterdam are following to build up a Forum Theatre performance. I will share weekly posts with exercises, ideas and moments we are having during our forum theatre sessions. For those who are new to this form of theatre, I have created a post about Forum Theatre. Feel free to check it out!
Our journey started last June 2016 when David and I dreamt of having a theatre group in Amsterdam. We dream of co-creating a space for learning and exploring Theatre of the Oppressed techniques as a starting point and going beyond as we experiment with it. We wanted to end up having a grounded Theatre Group in Amsterdam. We believe in the power of Theatre which brings about creativity, exploration of inner strengths, ARTivism and social change. We made our core values clear: diversity and inclusion. We posted an invitation in our meetup group! And after a week 16 participants confirmed! That is how this journey began.
Since then, we have hosted around 15 sessions and stretched the concept of participatory theatre and participation to its max! Our sessions are based on games, exercises, discussions, points of view and longings. We are enjoying the process and getting a lot of learnings out of it. For this reason, we want to share our experience with the world!
Our 2017's goal: Create a Forum Theatre
2017 started with a warm group feeling to create and share! In Feb we decided to create a Forum Theatre performance.
Who are we?
We are a diverse group of individuals from all walks of life. We are from everywhere and nowhere! We live in Amsterdam (well, some of us) and we want to express ourselves and our stories through Participatory Theatre. In our Forum Theatre group, we speak English, Spanish, Arabic, Italian and Dutch. Our theatrical language is English!
We have diverse backgrounds. Some of us have done some acting and theatre before, some others have never done theatre before.
We are all actors: being a citizen is not living in society, it is changing it. - Augusto Boal
We meet every week in the evening for a few hours. We play, share body-images, create scenes and discuss disturbing issues of the world. We've talked about disconnection and connection, fears, work-life balance, stress, career and more! As you can see, we are in the quest to find "the question" which will define our Forum Theatre performance.
Theatre is the art of looking at ourselves. - Augusto Boal
